introduction
Who is Ryan Angel Meza?
Ryan Angel Meza is an American photographer with roots established from his birth country (Philippines) and raised in San Benito, Texas, a small town located just a short distance from a port of entry into Mexico. While most of his peers pursued careers in the medical field or as border patrol agents, Ryan Angel developed a love and passion for media arts while attending San Benito High School.
In 2004, he relocated to Sacramento, California, where he earned Associate Degrees in Photography and Marketing at Sacramento City College. He later completed his Bachelor’s Degree in Photography at Sacramento State. Since 2017, Ryan Angel has served as an adjunct instructor at Sacramento City College, teaching portraiture and studio lighting.
His most notable published works can be found in Sacramento Magazine, Comstock Magazine, and The Wall Street Journal.
At the heart of Ryan Angel’s work, there is a celebration of the spirit and strength of the people.

“BEST IN SHOW” SENIOR PROJECT
SACRAMENTO STATE UNIVERSITY 2019
Project Title: “Douglas Hall”
Medium: Photographic Prints, 12x18 images, window mounted in 18x24 framing
Artist Statement: “Douglas Hall” is about the celebration of individuality and diversity while also presenting the idea of vulnerability, self-awareness, and the art of language. Ironically, Douglas Hall is a building at Sacramento State that hosts classes in the fields of English, Psychology, Philosophy, and Foreign Language.
Though the title is reflective of where the individuals were photographed, it is more important to take note that it resembles a place where students all emerge in time—the opportunity to congregate should one choose or simply pass-through. The distinctive lighting is an important characteristic that depicts the passing of time and the relationship it carries with ideas such as “what-ifs” and “regrets.” Is the lighting premonitory to the individual’s future? The hallway is a passage where students can find their way through such ideas and conflicts.
Conflicts? Yes, most of the time, conflicts are within ourselves (mental, emotional, and even physical) and are rarely visible to the stranger. When was the last time you had a real and heartfelt conversation with someone? Technology devices have seemed to find its way to block us from communicating anymore. Ironic isn’t it.
Furthermore, this body of work investigates how people are perceived based on the way they (re)present themselves—what can body language reflect, when confronted, during this decisive and brief moment in time?
